Reach High 2 Study Support Project

Young Pakistani people in Burngreave, Page Hall, Fir Vale and Firth Park will now have access to extra support with the launch of Reach High 2, developed by the Kashmir Education Trust and managed by Burngreave Community Action Trust.

Reach High 2 Co-ordinator, Shanaz Khan, explained why there is a need to emulate some of the successes achieved by other study support projects.

“Observing Somali Education Breakthrough, some of us saw the need to set up this programme, to help young Pakistani children to develop better English reading and writing skills. As many parents do not speak much English, this prevents many children from receiving additional support with homework and educational welfare.”

The initiative will work with feeder schools to identify groups of young Pakistani children that need additional educational support. “As this develops we will set up a referral system for other organisations, such as Sure Start, Connexions, hostels, refugee centres, community mentors and local mosques.” explains Shanaz.

The project, funded by New Deal and run by a small team of dedicated volunteers, aims to deliver study support around core curriculum subjects, maths, English and science, as well as giving support around personal, social and health issues. All staff are qualified teachers and support assistants who have undergone appropriate police checks, assessments and interviews.
